Water Monitoring Solution

Water treatment is essential to process and improve the quality of water. It provides clean water for the household, industry, farm, irrigation, and other uses. Water from a water source, such as ground water, requires treatment to remove contaminants and undesirable chemicals, or it reduces their concentration so that the water becomes safe to use.

This treatment is crucial to human health. In water treatment plants, million gallons of water are treated every day. Maintaining a reliable and efficient automation system is very important as any downtime could cost water outages in cities. By integrating PACs (Programmable Automation Controllers), SCADA software, and expandable IO modules, ICP DAS USA’s water monitoring system can visualize all monitoring data, as well as increase efficiency. Engineers can reduce or eliminate time spent manually checking the status of the water tanks. To achieve the target capacity for water output, many clients adopt our water monitoring solution.

Water quality sensors acquire values such as the Total Plate Count, Odor, Turbidity, Chroma, Total Hardness, pH Value, Nitrite Nitrogen, Fluoride Salts, etc. Meanwhile, acquired water quality data will be sent to the XP-8731-WES7 PAC via the I-87017ZW analog input module in standard type 4-20 mA analog signals. The XP-8731-WES7 PAC will then calculate water quality and exchange data with SCADA system. If an exceptional situation occurs, the XP-8731-WES7 PAC will immediately report the details on SCADA software to the host computer in control room, so engineers can quickly handle and resolve the problem.

Suspended particles in the water cannot be fully isolated by regular sedimentation; therefore, coagulant chemicals are added to the water to combine the majority of non-settling particles together into heavier solids. This process is called “flocculation”. During the flocculation process, the raw water that contains heavier solids will flow into a sub-tank, allowing the water to stand for a period of time while enabling removal of the solids. However, each sub-tank has limitations on its capacity, which is why several tanks are needed. The I-87057W digital output modules controls the sub-tanks’ flow valve. When a sub-tank becomes full, the water will be directed to the next available sub-tank. In addition, PAC IO modules are easily expandable, for future development, when more channels are needed.

PACs have many advantages over existing IPCs and PLCs. A PAC has the ability to run PC-based Control software such as Visual Basic.NET, Visual C#, Visual C++, SCADA software, etc. Users can develop programs using their preferred programming language. System operations are reliable and stable at high temperatures and in a high humidity environment, like a water treatment plant; furthermore, all PACs are fanless and have many failsafe components to ensure24/7 operation. Unlike IPCs, PACs has no moving parts and don’t have many running programs. ICP DAS USA offers PACs with Linux, Windows CE 7, Embedded Standard 7, and the latest Windows 10 IoT Enterprise Operating System for industrial high performance and reliable automation.
