KingView in the Use of VPSA Technology to Process Air Separation Industry’s Application
Preface
Air separation system is an equipment use to separate the nitrogen and oxygen from the air. In recent years, most small and medium-sized (nitrogen or oxygen production under 10000m3/h) air separation system use "PLC + PC software" control method, control system’s stability and ease of implementation have won the favour by vast number of customers. VPSA separation technology uses pressurized adsorption, desorption method to separate nitrogen and oxygen from the air, provide users with monomer gas, and base on the difference of the adsorbent system can isolate nitrogen or oxygen.
Using VPSA technology to process air separation by air separation system comparing with the traditional ASU make equipment startup faster, lesser investment, shorter construction periods, lower energy consumption and other features. For sewage treatment, steel and other industries, the system can meet the oxygen needs of the user.
Technology Profile
Using VPSA oxygen process (see Figure 1) as an example, air separation system equipment consists of fans, vacuum pumps, absorber, heat exchanger, oxygen compressor and other main equipments, also have some auxiliary systems such as the water circulation system, and air instrument system.

Air filter to remove impurities from the air, compressed by the blower, cooling by heat exchanger, from the adsorber into the bottom of adsorber, adsorber filled with selective adsorption of air moisture, CO2 and hydrocarbon adsorbent, also equipped with the selective adsorption of air nitrogen adsorbent. Air through the adsorbent bed layer, air's H2O, CO2, hydrocarbons, nitrogen adsorbed selectively by adsorption method, oxygen products outflow from the top of the absorber. After adsorbent saturation, through reduced adsorber pressure to achieve component adsorption and desorption, outflow from absorber. Each cycle, adsorber has utilized adsorption, directional depressurize, vacuum desorption, pressure equalizer, and pressure charge of these five steps to complete.
These five steps work through the switching by the pneumatic valve switch to achieve. Pneumatic valve switching action uses PLC control system setup program of the control values's automatic switching.

Control System Components
Air separation control system uses dual-CPU hardware redundancy PLC products; supervisory system’s software uses Wellincontrol’s Kingview, unmanned systems functions in accordance with regulatory requirements and instrumentation design configuration. Using PLC logic programming and supervisory system’s Kingview monitoring software’s joint control mode consist a variety of communications and remote monitoring capabilities. PLC and Kingview redundancy configuration use redundancy configuration, network architecture using redundant fiber-optic ring network structure, significantly improve system stability and operability. Detail structure is shown in Figure 2:
As shown in above Figure 2, PLC control system use dual CPU hardware redundant structure, PLC switching action can be completed within milliseconds, guarantee the safety of the system and timeliness. Supervisory system mainly consists of IO server, login server, alarm server, historical server and web server.
1. IO host server and IO server made up supervisory hot standby, during system normal operation, host server and server are all running, but server do not collection real-time data, but through network to obtain host server data, at the same time responsible for host server’s monitoring. After host server stops, server collects data and completely replace the host server’s functions, after host server return to operation, host server stop collection data, system restore to normal condition.
2. Engineer station can configure supervisory system, modify configuration procedures, modify PLC program, his jurisdictions is quite large.
3. According to the project size, the size of the processed data can choose these three servers: login server, alarm server, and historical server, or may use one server to perform three roles. At the same time, may use it as central control room’s dispatch station.
4. WEB server independently saves in the specialized data’s network publishing for user to access.
5. User need to access data through firewall, it can restrict the IP access and data flow direction, ensure network safety.
Main functions achieved by Kingview software:
- Data acquisition: Real-time on-site concentrate on monitoring of fans, air compressors, vacuum pumps, oxygen compressor, and other operation conditions and each important operation data acquisitions, also may simultaneously display its running state diagram and numerical. Using Kingview to carry on system development, achieve real-time data curve, historical data curve, PID parameter setting, valve timing control settings and other operations.
- Alarm function: Kingview can achieve alarm or beep sound and light alarm, when collected data goes beyond the set value, alarm will be send, operator or decision maker should take the to make the corresponding air separation system, at the same time, providing permitted staff direction to modify parameters online.
- Remote control: in the entire control, adsorption towers take up the most parts, mainly is the value switching controls, to achieve molecular sieve’s auto-desorption. Valve’s timing control uses formula control to achieve, simply, fast and easy. Some of the control valve is based on pipeline gas pressure is too large to carry out emptying valve, few individual valve PID controls mainly use PLC to achieve, Kingivew software process some parameter setting in supervisory system. Oxygen compressor, vacuum pump and fans controls mainly for the motor’s stop and start, after the equipment vibration monitoring alarm, equipments will automatically stop their operations. - Some of the control valve is based on pipeline gas pressure is too large to carry out emptying valve, few individual valve PID controls mainly use PLC to achieve, Kingivew software process some parameter setting in supervisory system. Oxygen compressor, vacuum pump and fans controls mainly for the motor’s stop and start, after the equipment vibration monitoring alarm, equipments will automatically stop their operations.
- Historical data saving and query: Data can simultaneously be collected by supervisory system, at the same time may be inputted into database, simultaneously database also will be updated and saved, user through real-time curve may access data condition, through access of the historical curve to query directly database and other operations to carry on historical data querying and data's further analysis.
- Operating historical records: Kingview can auto-record every operation records, at the same time, in practical management, only operational personnel with the granted jurisdiction or manger to be allow to operate, this way it further ensure the system's security and processing stability.
- Online query every statement and auto-printing: base on the user's request may access every kinds of statements, and achieve auto-printing, like: work schedule, daily report, monthly report and so on.
Summary
In this article we discussed the application used of Kingview in small and medium-sized air separation system supervisory system, system uses multiple redundant design structure for the user to choose from, through actual project confirmation we have received many users' acclaims. At the same time as Kingview meet the function of the supervisory system monitoring software's on-site monitoring, it also provides a wide range of control functions to meet the actual customers' needs, perfectly completed the supervisory system's tasks. Considering the entire air separation system’s security, several interlocking actions and PID control are recommended in the PLC parts for user to achieve. This way, even if the supervisory system is temporary paralysis, the system would not affect the overall operation.
In short, "configuration software + PLC" controlling mode can meets the demand of small and medium-sized air separation system, system implementation is easy to use, stable and flexible operation, openness and other features.
With the development of the technology, the continuous expansion of the equipment, it can satisfy the demand of the small and medium-size air separation system market. In recent years, VPSA technology relies on its advantages has gradually replaced the traditional method of cryogenic air separation technology.
